How to play MotoKart
You can be racing within a minute of opening the page. This guide covers the controls, the few things worth knowing about drifting and pickups, and how to set up a wallet when you're ready to race for SOL.
Your first race (free)
- Open motokart.fun. The game loads in the browser. On a phone, turn it sideways, because the game only runs in landscape.
- Press Quick Race. You'll see the open races and a Play free option. A free race needs no wallet and nothing is staked.
- Take a seat and race. Wait for the countdown, then drive. Laps, your position and the minimap are on screen the whole time.
Controls
| Action | Keyboard | Gamepad | Touch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Accelerate | W or ↑ | A / Cross | Automatic |
| Brake, then reverse | S or ↓ | B / Circle or left trigger | Brake button |
| Steer | A D or ← → | Left stick | Left and right buttons |
| Hop and drift | Space (hold) | Right bumper or right trigger | HOP (hold) |
| Fire stored Turbo | Shift | X / Square | BOOST |
| Return to track | R | Back / View | On-screen button |
Drifting
Hold hop as you turn into a corner and the kart slides. Keep steering through the drift, then let go on the way out and you get a mini-turbo. The longer you hold a clean drift, the stronger that boost. Good drivers link one drift into the next and never really slow down for corners.
Pickups
Every pickup is placed on the track, the same for every racer, and does the same thing every time. None of them are random, so nothing decides a race except driving.
- Coins: +0.5% top speed each, up to ten. A wall hit without a Crash Guard costs you three.
- Crash Guard (the ? box): for ten seconds, it absorbs most of your next wall hit and protects your coins.
- Turbo (orange pill): stores one two-second boost. Fire it when you want with Shift or BOOST.
- Off-road grip (eggplant): three seconds of grass or dirt at nearly road speed. It's only used up while you're off the road.
Setting up a wallet for SOL races
Paid races need a Solana wallet, because your entry fee is sent to MotoKart's on-chain escrow. Here's how to get one ready:
- Create a game wallet. MotoKart makes a new Solana wallet in your browser and shows you its private key once. Back that key up before you continue. The game asks you to prove you saved it, then locks the wallet on your device with a password.
- Import a key you already have. Paste a private key to use an existing wallet as your game wallet.
- Fund it from your main wallet. Connect Phantom or Solflare and send SOL across to your game wallet, or send SOL to its address from anywhere, an exchange included.
Your game wallet pays entry fees without a wallet pop-up for every race, and it's where prizes arrive. You can withdraw from it back to any Solana address whenever you like.
Keep your key safe. The game wallet's key stays on your device, so we can't recover it for you. If you lose both the key and the password, the funds in that wallet are gone.
Entering a SOL race
- Join or host. Pick an open race, or open your own. As host you choose the circuit and the entry fee, and whether AI karts fill the empty seats.
- Pay and join. Your entry fee goes into the race's on-chain escrow. The pot shown in the lobby is everything the racers have paid in.
- Invite people. Copy the invite link and send it to friends. It brings them straight to your race.
- Race and collect. Once the race settles on Solana, the top finishers are paid to their wallets. See how the pot is split.
If you quit a paid race partway through, your entry stays in the pot. If the race never starts or never settles, every racer gets a full refund.
